About the host

“#Broke is the show about why you don’t have money, and what you do to get it.

I’m Carla Javier.”

I’m a freelance reporter and producer based in Los Angeles, Calif. Before coming to USC Annenberg as a graduate fellow in journalism, I studied psychology (and children’s literature and songwriting and gender) at Princeton. I’ve been reporting ever since my third grade class “newspaper,” which we made in Microsoft Publisher.

Stories have brought me into a food truck created to reduce recidivism rates in the Miami juvenile justice system, a support group of mothers who have lost children to heroin addiction, and the home of a man who might hold the largest private record collection in the world.

I have reported and produced stories for National Public Radio, Public Radio International, American Public Media, The Miami Herald, WLRN, WNYC, WPRB, and The Knoxville News Sentinel. You can read and hear more of my work here.

Still want more? I tweet about diversity, the future of journalism, the election, bad puns, and food over at @carlamjavier and I write movie reviews and other opinionated things on Medium.
