Video games have historically been a white, male-dominated media, not only in terms of audience but within the actual games themselves. Of the scarce number of women protagonists to choose from, only a handful are Black and even fewer are darker-skinned women.

Mela Lee has voiced over a dozen video game characters. Most recently, she voiced the popular character Jade on Mortal Kombat 11 — a Black woman. She spoke about her journey into voice acting and the importance of having Black women represented both on and off-screen.
